The clients wanted a kitchen that would make the most of the size available plus lots of storage and a display area to make it more interesting. The clients also favoured real wood but still wanted a modern look.
I decided to use real Ash wood doors but mix it with black granite and marble door handles. I used large light porcelain floor tiles to keep the area light but mix it with a dramatic colour. Grey porcelain tiles were used for the walls to match the grey carcas and a shelved area was created with a light blue painted backdrop.
The accessories chosen were in colours and styles of a 1950s retro theme ie;- Light blues, whites, creams, pinks and blacks. I had some Marilyn Monroe Pop Art coffee cups which I had placed on the shelves, this gave me the idea to paint representations of these on canvases and place them on a blank wall in the kitchen. The Alessi kettle, Alessi accessories, dualit toaster etc gave it a retro modern feel and the idea to build a table top which could be pulled out of a drawer to create a little breakfast bar really made the most of the small space. This was used with Italian retro dining chairs and completed the look.
